![]() ![]() Basic tech support ("what does this error message mean") is harder if you aren't next to each other or the host is very experienced with remote work. Remote makes this worse, since communication burden is higher and the intern will be a bigger distraction. Maybe the situation right now means the team is all hands on deck to fix some important issue and we simply don't have time to work on some other thing with an intern. Interns are distraction and can sometimes be a net negative on productivity. Maybe the host has a bunch of kids and they are figuring out how to home school them and their time and attention is more limited. Maybe the intern hosting is a growth opportunity for them and I'm concerned about how they'd manage remotely. A host that I previously thought could handle it might not be able to handle it anymore. My team is already stressed due to the pandemic. All of these issues are way way way harder to deal with for a remote intern. I've seen problems with interns who don't do any work, or are total assholes to be around, or who go down weird rabbit holes and need to be kept on track all the time. I have no ability to know anything about previous internships at other companies. This makes onboarding and accessibility for answering questions way harder and may put a stressful burden on the host who is getting pinged at 6am. If my intern is now stuck on the east coast (or across an ocean), there will be less working hour overlap with the team. My team is continuing with our internships. We could always do with more help and wisdom, friend! The better the FAQ, the harder we can come down on lazy posters with low-effort OPs, which means a higher quality subreddit experience for you. Please don't start new threads about these topics without getting mod permission first, lest we be forced to.
